What are essential oils?
Essential oils are volatile plant extracts that are very concentrated. Oils are obtained through several different extraction methods, and what part of the plant the oil comes from can vary. However, the oil is usually extracted from the most aromatic part. For example, citrus oils come from the rind, and rose oil comes from rose petals.
One might think essential oils are gentle and mostly unreactive because they’re all-natural. However, that’s not the case at all! They’re very potent – sometimes 50-100% stronger than dry herbs! When using essential oils, a little bit goes a long way. It should be appropriately diluted before applying directly to the skin.
Disclaimer: We do not condone the consumption of essential oils. It should only be done under the guidance of a qualified practitioner. To learn more about essential oils for your health speak with our local expert Kelly Frick.
How Should I Dilute My Oils?
As stated before, essential oils can be very potent. The risk of using undiluted oils is skin sensitivity. Intolerance to oils may occur because of the high concentration of plant oils.
In most cases, you’ll need a carrier oil – a neutral, plant-based oil that can act as a base to help better facilitate the absorption of the oil on the body. Some of the most common types of carrier oils are coconut, sesame, and olive oil. SHK also cares for jojoba and argan oils.
Though specific dilutions can vary based upon personal needs, the general rule of thumb is a dime size carrier with 3-4 drops of the essential oil as a good ratio.
What can Essential Oils be used for?
As a very versatile product, essential oils can be used for a multitude of things. Some common uses are personal care, in-home cleaning, and for all over well-being.
