Exercises may keep the belt tighter around the waist, but it also plays a vital role balancing hormones in the brain. A regular exercise routine increases blood flow and helps channel hormones to the proper places. There is no way around it, get moving to keep improving.
The top 8 benefits to kicking up the sweat with a good exercise routine include:
- Reduced brain fog
- Lower blood pressure
- Depression Prevention
- Releases stress in a positive fashion
- Maintain a healthy weight
- Lower cholesterol
- Decreases the risks of cancer
- Improves testosterone levels and libido as you age
How much exercise should you be doing?
Adult men between the age of 18-64 should be active most days. You can divide your routine into one week achieving 2 1/2 to 5 hours of moderate exercise Each week. Activities like walking the dog briskly, mowing the lawn, swimming, or golf. Yoga or stretch class is also very beneficial and highly recommended as you get older.
An alternative could be 1 ½ to 2 ½ hours of intense cardio. Pick up a game of Basketball, ultimate football, cycling and toss in some weight lifting for strength and muscle maintenance at least twice a week.
A mix of moderate and hi energy ensures a good combination of muscle training and decreases the chances of injury.
Flexibility matters
As we age, muscles tighten up and increase the risk of Low back and hamstring problems. A good stretch routine is imperative in preventing injuries and stimulates muscle growth. Long and lean is king after 30.
You do not have to be a gym junkie. Have a set of weights at home and find a few videos to follow. Great stress relieve while you are stuck in a zoom conference meeting. (Don’t forget the camera setting!)
Hook up with a local men’s sports group on the court or field. In truth we all need to get away from the house once in a while and sitting at the bar is just not in fashion anymore. However, Bowling is still a great game to pick up! And yes, mowing the lawn counts as exercise.
